This is a cartridge for the audiophile who demands the ultimate in sonic performance from his system, along with the convenience of a user-replaceable stylus. The 1042 uses a bare natural diamond stylus with a Gyger S profile. This is a revolutionary line contact type that is shaped to more closely resemble a record cutting head than any previous design. The stylus profile is the primary factor determining the overall sound quality of a cartridge and the shape of the Gyger S with its 6µm radius allows it to track the smallest groove detail with absolute fidelity. Midrange tonality is incredibly accurate and precise with high frequency sibilance banished. The extended sidewall contact of the Gyger-S diamond also gives the 1042 unsurpassed resolution of fine groove modulations, producing an exceptionally detailed, smooth and musical sound.
The 1000 Series uses a robust, one-piece body that holds fixed parts firmly in place. Made from a special type of ultra-stiff, glass-filled polyester called Pocan, the body can be firmly screwed into the cartridge shell for maximum efficiency and optimum sound quality. The user-replaceable stylus holder fits securely into the body with a locating pin that prevents unwanted vibrations that would otherwise color the sound. An integral can of mu-metal keeps the generator parts shielded from buzzing magnetic fields. Because Pocan has a high strength-to-mass ratio, the overall mass of the G1000 Series cartridges is kept below 6.5g. Low mass and moderate compliance keep the natural arm/cartridge resonance within safe limits for easy matching with a wide range of tonearms.
Finely etched mu-metal is laminated to form the pole pieces around which are mounted two newly wound coils of four thousand turns each. This unique design reduces mass and also makes for a very efficient magnetic circuit that produces above average output. This construction also reduces the high frequency loss inherent in conventional designs, making the frequency response smooth and extended.
The 1000 Series utilizes a unique ultra-low mass, micro-miniature Alnico V magnet made to a tolerance that cannot be matched by any other manufacturer in the world. Soldered to the magnet is a gold plated nickel tie rod that provides a ground path for the vinyl static charge to accumulate and stabilizes the cantilever from unwanted vibrational patterns. The entire ultra-low mass assembly is then mounted in a special butyl rubber polymer with optimized damping characteristics.
Correctly setting the stylus azimuth (or horizontal tracking angle) is essential to maintaining a correct stereo sound stage. Azimuth is the term used to describe the angle that the vertical centerline of the stylus makes with the surface of the record and this must be exactly perpendicular to the record groove. This is not usually a user adjustable parameter on most budget turntables and so it is vital that the cartridge leaves the factory with the azimuth precisely adjusted. An incorrectly adjusted azimuth can cause uneven channel balance and increased crosstalk between channels which will seriously degrade the stereo image.
