New to the HE1000se are neodymium magnets, which increase efficiency and reduce distortion for truly pure sound. Neodymium, widely recognized for its ability to deliver unparalleled magnetic force in a compact size, delivers exceptionally smooth output, equal to that of larger, heavier ferrite magnets. With neodymium, the new model's speaker is faster and more dynamic, presenting all the sonic details for a more convincing performance.

The third iteration of the acclaimed 1000 Series, the new HE1000 Special Edition features increased efficiency for superior performance when paired with any signal source, from audiophile-grade electronics to high-resolution digital audio players (DAPs) -- or even tablets and smartphones.

The previous model, the HE1000 V2 (which remains in production), is one of the best-reviewed high-performance headphones in the personal audio world. With an increase in sensitivity from 91 to 96 dB, the HiFiMan HE1000se is easier for any amplifier to drive, providing greater presence and realism, especially when paired with high-performance electronics.

Like the V2 version, the patented open-firing “window shade” system minimizes distortion by preventing harmful sound reflections and related vibrations from distorting the artist's reproduced performance. The result is a wide, natural soundstage that mirrors the experience of listening to live music in an acoustically accurate concert hall or music club.

The magneto-planar operating principle

You can think of a planar magnetic speaker as a sort of cross between an electrostatic and a dynamic speaker. Like a traditional dynamic transducer, a magnetic field around a current-carrying conductor is used to drive the diaphragm. And like an electrostatic system, the diaphragm is a thin, flexible, and transparent layer which, unlike a pure electrostatic speaker, incorporates tiny internal conductors.
