A brand new speaker with classic bookshelf appeal: the elegant and compact Mission 750

Cambridgeshire, England – After launching the iconic 770 loudspeaker in 1978 and the more compact 700 two years later, the specialist

of Mission loudspeakers continued its journey to become a dominant force in the British hi-fi industry. It played a role

key in the popularization of smaller models – the so-called “bookshelf” speakers – in the 1980s and 1990s, offering speakers that were easy to

system, impressively designed and extremely engaging to listen to.

Mission has recently dug into its rich archive to reimagine the early triumphs – in particular, the 770 and 700 – with great

success. The revival of these classic British loudspeakers does not simply appeal to the nostalgia of music lovers of a certain age; in their newly redesigned form they are exceptional loudspeakers by modern standards, enchanting a new generation as their predecessors did decades ago.
2024 sees another retro-inspired speaker join the Mission ranks: the Mission 750. Unlike the 770 and 700, this is not an update of an earlier model from Mission’s past, but a new design, with classic influences that celebrate Mission’s illustrious heritage.

Measuring 355 x 216 x 270mm (HxWxD), the new Mission 750 is a classic compact ‘bookshelf’ loudspeaker, like the ones that made Mission so big in decades past. Its industrial design is a perfect match for the redesigned, larger 700 and 770 models in the current Mission range, inspired by the white baes and large logo that adorned the company’s early models from the original 700 onwards. But, like their modern counterparts, the original 770 and 700 were larger; the compact-sized speakers of the new 750 only became a key part of the Mission range later.

The success of the redesigned 700 and 770, launched in 2022, created demand for a smaller model that blends the same classic industrial design with modern construction techniques and technologies. Thus, the Mission 750 was born.

Driver inversion for musical immersion

A distinctive feature of the Mission 750 is the inverted driver layout. Until the Mission arrived
700 in 1980, two-way dynamic loudspeakers were invariably designed with the tweeter on top and the main driver on the bottom. The 700 pioneered a different approach, placing the high-frequency unit below the mid/bass driver. This configuration, known as IDG (Inverted Driver Geometry), became a signature feature of the Mission and remains a cornerstone of the company's designs today, including the new
750.

IDG aids in time alignment: by positioning the mid/bass driver closer to ear level with the treble unit positioned below, the path lengths from the acoustic centers of the two drivers are equalized so that the sound waves coincide at the listener's head height. This improves stereo imaging and helps ensure the speakers sound perfectly coherent and transparent.

Industrial and mechanical design requires precise calculations to ensure optimal positioning, spacing and alignment

of the drive units, along with the crossover design.

Mid Woofer

The 750's mid/bass cone is made from polypropylene, a material pioneered by Mission for use in commercial loudspeakers. However, this new 135mm cone is packed with minerals that make it larger than standard polypropylene diaphragms, producing fast, tight bass that lets the listener hear exactly how bass instruments are played. From the power of metal, dance or indie, to the intricacies of a string quartet, this new cone delivers the pace, extended response and low coloration to capture the energy, character and detail of the music.

The entire mid/bass driver is built to the same high-end standards as the larger units created for the 770 and 700

redesigned, incorporating a specially designed engine system and a rigid die-cast chassis. Great attention has been paid

in combining a low-density nitrile coating with the diaphragm, to match its impedance and reduce reflections from the edge of the

cone.

The precisely contoured cabinet and rear-firing reflex port are tuned to a very low frequency, avoiding "bass crunch".

"one note" typical of some bass reflex systems. The bass extends powerfully and cleanly down to below 42 Hz in the room,

an impressive result for a speaker of this size.

Tweeter

Mission's early designs focused on mid-range performance because that's where the strength of hi-fi reproduction lies.

of vinyl records. For today's digital sources and higher-end turntables, the performance of a speaker at frequencies

extremes are considered of equal importance to the midrange. The 750’s treble unit incorporates a lightweight, damped 28mm microfibre dome with an ultra-smooth response, supported by a damped rear chamber that pushes the fundamental resonance well below the crossover region.

The quality of this high frequency unit marries perfectly with the mid/bass driver to ensure uniformity of character.

across the entire range of the entire speaker. Some treble units may sound detailed but overly bright and

inconsistent; others may sound smooth but lack crisp clarity.

The 750's high-frequency performance is smooth and detailed, a perfect extension of the musical ensemble.

Networking skills

When it comes to designing crossover networks, today's software-based mapping and measurement techniques allow

Mission to perfect the balance between bass and midrange and adjust the crossover on the treble unit by mapping the slopes of the

acoustic crossover with extreme precision. Even so, choosing the EQ and crossover for the 750 involved hundreds of hours of listening sessions using a wide variety of music before the final crossover was settled on.

The circuit was then mapped using very short signal paths and inserting high quality components such as

super transparent polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors. The resulting transparency of musical details

ensures that the emotional thrill of the music is fully conveyed, whilst maintaining a seamless transition.

continuity solution between the drive units.

Get ready

The drivers and crossover are housed in a real wood veneered cabinet, featuring a double-wall sandwich of

High density MDF and particle board bonded by a layer of high damping adhesive. This results in a cabinet with

panel resonance well below audibility, allowing the speakers to do their job uncontaminated by the

cabinet-induced coloration at all frequencies.

The internal reinforcement adds strength to the front, creating a mechanical support that aids the dynamic performance of the unit.

bass and reveals the microdynamics of the musical performance. Added to this are layers of acoustic damping fiber,

strategically placed to absorb reflections inside the cabinet without excessively dampening the quality of the bass.

" Bookshelf " is a traditional term for speakers of this size but, as always, they should be placed on a pair of dedicated speaker stands for optimum performance. Since the 750 is a typical sized bookshelf speaker, there are many options available, including Mission stands .

Comment Peter Comeau

Mission's acoustic design director is Peter Comeau, a man whose designs for the brand date back to the 1990s. Speaking

of the new Mission 750, Comeau said:

“Although the 750 isn’t based on a specific model from the past, its size marks it out as a classic ‘bookshelf’ design, while its white base and large logo evoke Mission’s early years, when the company conquered the speaker world. Even its name echoes this period; Mission founder, the late Farad Azima, was quite fond of the number seven, which is why so many Mission speakers began with the number in their names.”

“The 750 fits into the current Mission range as a compact speaker for those who admire the much-lauded retro design and captivating sound of the much-lauded 770, but are unable to physically and financially accommodate it. Much of its design is derived from the larger speaker: it uses the same treble unit and mid/bass driver engineering, albeit redesigned to fit the 750’s more compact form . The multi-layer cabinet construction is also similar, adapted for optimum acoustic performance across the frequency range from a smaller physical design.

“The result is an expressive and casual “bookshelf” – or “stand” – speaker that belies its compact dimensions. The

The techniques and technologies used to create the 750 are cutting edge, but as always with Mission this technology is used exclusively to capture the emotional power of music, in line with the company motto, “Music leads, technology follows.”
