QED cables with a cross-sectional area greater than 2.5 mm2 use air core technology to overcome the skin effect by joining together several smaller, separately insulated cores to form a larger CSA. If these conductors are arranged around a central hollow polyethylene core, the self-inductance exhibited by the cable can be reduced to approximately half of that predicted by calculation.
