CTA 407 - Integrated Amplifier
Copland has always maintained that the amplifier is the interface between the signal sources and the speaker system; any information lost or misinterpreted at this point is lost forever, and conversely, any additional information introduced is amplified.
Amplifiers are considered everyday devices and if some are of standard quality and construction, others successfully deviate from the conventional, reminding us of the pursuit of perfection, a human virtue that we like to recognize and approach.
The aesthetics of most Copland amplifiers are characterized by a no-frills luxury. However, with the CTA407 tube amplifier, the design simplicity has been compromised by the addition of a fair amount of electronics to support the amplifier's audio stages.
The forty LEDs on the front panel (10 for each tube) display the bias system and diagnostics of the tubes used in the CTA407. For those who do not want to see them always on, it is possible to deactivate them.
One of the advantages of the CTA407 amplifier is its automatic bias adjustment for any tube from the 6550/KT88/KT120/KT150 family used in the power amplifier. The CTA407's self-biasing system is not only lossless, but is also an integral part of the internal high-pass filtering, perfectly matching the amplifier's transfer function and significantly improving its overall quality.
The CTA407 features five line inputs, including a tape monitor loop, and an MM phono input, capable of accommodating both moving magnet and high-output moving coil cartridges. It is an evolution of the CTA405 amplifier, which has been coveted by audiophiles worldwide since its launch more than a decade ago.
The push-pull output stages consist of a pair of power tubes per channel, in an ultra-linear fixed configuration, which feature the low distortion of triodes and the generous power of tetrodes. Typically, a pair of 6550 or KT family tubes in a push-pull configuration can deliver over 100W of power. By moderating the output power, the CTA407 delivers 2x50W in high-bias mode in Class A/AB. In practice, this means the amplifier delivers most of its power in Class A.
Thanks to the excellent quality of the output transformers used, almost perfect linearity is achieved before using feedback, reducing the internal delay compensation networks and ensuring high stability after the 18 dB negative feedback closing loop.
The CTA407 reproduces music remarkably accurately, without ever feeling fatiguing, with strong dynamics and wide flexibility in speaker selection. The low noise from the amplifier itself is a joy, especially for owners of high-efficiency speaker systems.
The CTA407 employs a motorized volume control and can be operated in its main functions by the Copland RC102A remote control.
